Possible signs of the presence of an APD

Parents and teachers are the primary screeners in identifying listening difficulties in children and it is this reason that they should be aware of what to look out for. Research shows that 2-8% of children will have an APD of some type. The following are some indicators that an APD may be present:

  • Has difficulties remembering / following directions or answering questions
  • Is easily distracted
  • Appears confused by what is being said or generally doesn’t “hear” what was said
  • Demonstrates poor behaviour at home or in the classroom
  • Seems to not pay attention
  • Is underperforming at school in one or more areas such as reading, writing, spelling, maths
  • Is overly emotional and exhausted at the end of a school day
  • Struggles to complete homework tasks
